broadband advice
my sky broadband deal is coming to an end, want to leave as its been rubbish even though I get speed upto 40 (whatever that means), I don't even get full bars on my phone in the same room, not massively on the net and don't want to pay too much, got a letter through earlier this month to go vodafone, superfast 2 for £20.95 a month, sounds perfect but just wanted to know if anyone has got them and if the signal is strong round the house. Of course i've tried to look up reviews but thought i'd see if anyone has any first hand experience, cheers.

One of my mates is on Vodafone - says they're unrealiable and customer service is appalling

Re: broadband advice
I went over to Vodafone from PlusNet earlier this month. No problems with the set up, or speed so far (have Superfast 2). Speed will differ between locations but they give you an average expected speed, and a lower one that they pay/credit you if they dip below it. They use the local BT exchange. As for coverage around the house, it's the same as PlusNet was (I have a couple of rooms where it is poor, but I could bung a booster in if needed).

Re: broadband advice
Wherever you go, buy it through Topcashback and you’ll get quite a bit of money back just for signing up via them. I changed mine to Virgin last month and got £125 back for pretty much doing nothing.

"and customer service is appalling"

This. They're up there with BA with dealing with their customers if they have an issue.

I'd pay more just to go with someone else.

Re: broadband advice
I was with bt paying £65pm for 70mb broadband, moved to talk talk getting same speed and probably better coverage through the house for £25pm.

Re: broadband advice
I’m with sky and have to say that the quality of the broadband has been pretty unreliable but I ammo in the sticks a bit and their customer service has always been great.

Neighbour down the road has had similar issues and has switched provider three times since we’ve lived here and his service has never got any better - so don’t go expecting a new company to make all the problems go away, aim for the price you want instead (which you can normally get from sky if you negotiate through their retentions team if you threaten to leave)

Also previous experience of virgin is they are fucking appalling to deal with so avoid them like the plague

Re: broadband advice
Everybody is moving about thinking they get a better deal. The market is the market, they must compete but they still have to make profits. They will put the price up sooner or later.

A lot of these companies all use the same network anyway so bad service from one provider could mean the same bad service from another.

Unless it's really shit stay where you are and save yourself a heart attack.

Re: broadband advice
Ritchie,

Your phone with Sky too? otherwise not getting full bars on your phone is nothing to do with your broadband or are you referring to the wifi bars? download speedtest.net, it will tell you how fast your download and upload speeds are; depending on where you live if the download speed is below 11 mbps then call Sky (provided you have their fibre package) complain tell them you are coming to the end of your contract and you'll see £40 drop to around £25. Do some googling to find out what speeds you are meant to be getting in your area. Your speed depends on how far away from the exchange you which is why all the broadband companies will tell you that the speeds are UP TO xx mbps (MegaBytes Per Second).

HTH.

Re: broadband advice
I have Vodafone home broadband and it's great, I pay about that. You get a discount if you have your mobile with them.

Only needed to call them once and that was about my mobile so can't comment on the service. But the fact I haven't had to says something. Been with them for about 2 years now for home BB, they offered me an incentive to renew at the same price.

Re: broadband advice
Virgin minimum bb speed is now 100 mb.

Put ours up to the standard at no extra cost.

Internet, basic channels, bt and sky sports costing 55 a month.

"Your speed depends on how far away from the exchange"

Is that true for fibre?

For fibre, it depends on how far away from the Green Cabinet (unless fibre direct to the property)

Depends - if it's FTTP (Fibre To The Premises - so Virgin, a very small subset of BT) then no, but if it's FTTC (Fibre To The Cabinet - most BT, everyone else) then massively yes

Re: broadband advice
When you're talking about wifi signal round the house it's not only about your internet provider and the router they give you, but could be effected by interference from other devices in your house, or from your neighbours, so you might end up with the same problems with a different provider.

Might be worth testing first before moving supplier. Try changing the channel on your router at least. This can help if you have neighbours all hogging the same wifi channel.

Don Rav.

We rented a place from a professor we knew a few years ago during a sabbatical and he had Talktalk

I would never used them after that. Semi-regular outages and slow speed to non-existent speed in evenings.

Maybe things have changed and maybe where we were or something but just my experience.

So it's not to the exchange for any case then only the distance to the cabinet ie the copper bit - Yes/No

I'm on copper all the way to the exchange, no fibre where I live

Re: broadband advice
I have Virgin its all fibre to your house, installed cable myself because there engineers are shit, they sent matey out to connect up had a couple of teething problems to start but now all sorted average speed when I run a test is 340mb and we all have phones, iPads, lads gaming, TVs, CCTV ETC ETC all connected.
£42.00 per month

Al the best

Re: broadband advice
Open reach ( BT ) have a programme to install fibre to the cabinet nationally. It is being rolled out in each area such that their cabinets furthest from the exchange are being cabled to first. This is because the copper connexion speeds farthest from the exchange are extremely slow compared to those nearby the exchange.
